ATVs, side-by-side vehicles, and other off-road machines are designed to be driven on rough terrain. The freedom to ride through nature is one of the thrills of owning this type of equipment. However, when you’re traveling at a high speed through untamed nature, it is important to have the proper safety gear so you can stay safe. At CFMOTO, we encourage all riders to wear safety gear whenever and wherever they are riding because accidents happen when you least expect it. Here are some pieces of equipment you should consider when you ride:

Helmet

Helmets are one of the most important pieces of equipment when it comes to many forms of recreation, whether it’s riding off-road vehicles or riding a bike. However, the difference is that helmets for ATVs and other vehicles are bigger and designed to withstand more of an impact than bike helmets are. While it is not required in all states to wear helmets when riding, it is highly encouraged. Accidents happen and it’s important to keep the most vulnerable part of your body safe.

Gloves

Not only do gloves protect your hands in the case of the crash, but they can also protect your hands from the scratches of trees and other bushes on the trails. Proper gloves also provide great grip control on the handlebars and steering wheel, which is crucial when you’re on rough surfaces.

Boots

Proper riding boots are crucial when it comes to staying safe on the trails. If you were to crash or fall off the machine, proper boots absorb shock and provide protection. Additionally, their thick material protects your feet and legs from the heat radiating off your engine, which is directly below your legs. Lastly, riding boots give you a better grip on the machine, reducing your risk of slipping off.

Long Sleeved Everything

Though prime riding season is usually during the warmer months of the year, it is important to consider wearing long sleeved shirts and long pants to protect yourself in the open country. When riding on rough terrain, it is likely that rocks, sticks, dirt, and other debris will be kicked up, possibly hitting you in the process. When you wear long sleeved shirts and pants, your skin is better protected from the elements, possibly saving you from injuries.

Goggles

Just like wearing a helmet to protect your head and gloves to protect your hands, wearing goggles to protect your eyes is crucial. Rocks, dirt, branches, and other debris can come up, striking your eyes and potentially damaging your eyesight. Debris is especially common when riding with more than one person, so eyewear is especially important in those situations.

Chest Protector

Chest protectors are not just useful for frequent riders, but for all riders. While you may not believe you need one, they can be instrumental in protecting you in an accident or from large debris that may fly up. If you were to fall off your machine, a chest protector would provide crucial protection for your organs. They may be overlooked pieces of equipment, but they are easily one of the most important pieces.
